What to Expect Before arriving for your session, it is a good idea not to eat any large or heavy meals, sugar, caffeine or other stimulants. If you have tight muscles, you may find bathing or showering beforehand helpful. Sessions will be conducted in a professional, yet quite and peaceful environment. It is necessary to turn off all pagers or cell phones before the session begins. You will be asked some questions regarding your medical history, physical condition, activity level, etc. Your therapist will assess any problem areas you may have by checking for restricted and painful movement, gently pressing for tenderness and observing your posture. You will be asked to disrobe in private, and drape yourself with a sheet and/or gown as appropriate. Each session is designed to meet your needs. The type of massage you will be receiving and the specific areas of your body that will be worked on will determine your required state of undress. Your privacy will be respected at all times. The only area of your body to be uncovered will be the area being worked on at that time. If there are any areas you would prefer not be included, be sure to mention so at the beginning of the session. You will be comfortably positioned on a padded massage table. Pillows and padded bolsters may be used to ensure your comfort. Massage oils and skin preparations have little or no scent and are hypoallergenic. It is important to immediately mention any pain, discomfort, or uneasiness experienced during your session. Massage Therapy is a pleasurable experience. In areas of injury or tension, there may be some discomfort felt. When these areas are massaged, it is a natural tendency to tense and hold your breath. You will be shown methods of deep breathing and relaxation. These can be beneficial during the massage and as a separate relaxation technique. During your session, try to go limp, like a rag doll. Allow your limbs to be moved into various positions without helping. You might fall asleep during your massage. This is an indication that your body is letting go of stress and tension. It is also not uncommon for emotional tension to be released. Do not be alarmed if you suddenly feel sad or joyful. You will be given a few minutes after the massage to get dressed in private. Do not rush to get up. You may feel slightly dizzy for a short time because of the effects that massage has on your circulatory system. It is a good idea to drink extra water after massage.
The therapist will return and you will have an opportunity to provide detailed feedback for your next session.
